⁴³ I have come in my Father’s name, and you do not accept me; but if someone else comes in his own name, you will accept him. ⁴⁴ How can you believe since you accept glory from one another but do not seek the glory that comes from the only God^[a]?^(A)

³⁶ Believe in the light while you have the light, so that you may become children of light.”^(A) When he had finished speaking, Jesus left and hid himself from them.^(B)

Belief and Unbelief Among the Jews

³⁷ Even after Jesus had performed so many signs^(C) in their presence, they still would not believe in him. ³⁸ This was to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet:

³⁹ For this reason they could not believe, because, as Isaiah says elsewhere:

⁴¹ Isaiah said this because he saw Jesus’ glory^(F) and spoke about him.^(G)

⁴² Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him.^(H) But because of the Pharisees^(I) they would not openly acknowledge their faith for fear they would be put out of the synagogue;^{(J) 43} for they loved human praise^(K) more than praise from God.^(L)
